VIPKid: All about Reward Systems for the Hiring Process

We use reward systems in every class for a little fun and encouragement. The reward system you use for the interview and mock class is super important so find out what they’re looking for here!

I love using reward systems in class! They give my students a little brain break and we can have some fun. They encourage them and let them know when they are doing a good job.

We use 2 reward systems during classes: stars and a secondary reward system. The stars are built into the classroom and the students get 5 stars in every class. They are super important to the students as they can buy games, pets and other things with them on the VIPKid app. In every class, my students get all 5 stars. I find some reason to give them a star. In 3000+ classes I have not given 5 stars about 3 times.

The secondary rewards can be anything you want! Anything that they collect or make progress through works as a reward. So add flowers in a vase, cars around a racetrack, princesses in the castle, scoops of ice cream on a cone, putting together Mr. Potato Head, etc. You do not have to use the one suggested in the lesson and I usually don’t. They are either dumb or they take too much time.

I use printed rewards (click here for lots of printed rewards), real things, toys, animals, etc. I also love to use digital rewards that I show on my phone, tablet or through a program like Manycam or Camtwist. Learn more about those here.

However, in the hiring process, you need to approach the rewards a little differently. In the live interview and the mock classes, they want you to use a reward system that is also an extension of the lesson. They are expecting you to use it to teach new vocabulary words and even use complete sentences with it.

Which VIPKid interview is the best one to do?

You have several options for the Interview Stage with VIPKid. Which one is best?

Once you pass the basic information, VIPKid will begin sending you lots of emails, phone calls, texts, smoke signals, etc. pushing you to schedule an interview immediately. Don’t do it yet! This is not a normal interview. You have to teach a class as part of the interview and you must use their teaching style to do that. As a part of teaching that lesson, you will need to set up a simple classroom background, prepare some props and have the appropriate equipment.

You have several choices for this step:

Live Interview and Simplified Demo Class: a brief interview to confirm your details and then you teach a 5-minute lesson “Me, Myself, and I” in the VIPKid classroom.
Recorded Interview and Simplified Demo Lesson – You’ll watch 5 short videos about the VIPKid teaching style and take a simple quiz. Then, you’ll record a short introduction and teach 3 slides. This is done on the VIPKid website.
Smart Demo – This interview is done completely on your smartphone on the VIPKID Teach App. It has some reading, a 5 question quiz on the reading and then you record yourself on the phone teaching one slide for 2:30.
Jumpstart Session – This is a new online video conference coaching session that you attend. It’s about 1.5 hours long. It is held several times a day. If you attend it, you go straight to the next step without doing an interview or demo lesson. If you don’t see the option for it or get an email about it, email them at teachvip@vipkid.com.cn and ask for an invitation to it.

I used to recommend the Live Interview but they have made some changes recently that make me now recommend the Smart Demo. The salary is determined by your education, experience and certifications. You would get the same salary no matter what interview you do, so do the quickest and easiest one. The Smart Demo only has you teach one slide so do it! The new Jumpstart is even faster!

VIPKid: How to teach the Smart Demo slides – UPDATED!

Are you in the hiring process for VIPKid? Wondering which interview you should do? I recommend doing the Smart Demo! This is my updated video with the latest techniques that they are looking for.

VIPKid now determines your salary by your education, number of years of experience with children and certifications. How you teach is just a pass or fail and does not affect your salary. Since that is the case, do the simplest interview, the Smart Demo. In it, you only teach one slide!

I recently got to sit down with one of the Mock Class Mentors and ask her about what they are looking for in the interview and mock classes. She helped me understand some of the details about the process and the specifics of their criteria.

VIPKid: What are they Expecting in the Demo and Mock Class.

If you are in the VIPKid hiring process and only watch one YouTube video about how to pass, this is it. You have to know what they are looking for in the VIPKid teaching style.

I have helped over 500 teachers get hired by VIPKid. Through all that time, I was basing what I taught on how I would teach and on the feedback that my referrals were sending me after they did each step of the way. I knew some of the things they were looking for but some were still a mystery.

VIPKid: How do I get hired? January 2020

VIPKid is a Chinese company that pairs North American teachers with students in China and around the world for English lessons. If you have a bachelor’s degree, a year of experience with children and are legally eligible to work in the US or Canada, you can get hired to teach with them as well.

The hiring process is a little confusing but I have figured it all out and can help you through every step. This video explains the hiring process and helps you understand the choices you have at each step. Watch this before you apply or if you are confused about what to do next.
